The Mens 2 got their season off to a winning start with a long trip to League newcomers Yoxall. A start time of 7.45pm allowed time to get there, but it was only a one-court church hall – just about big enough for a court and a low ceiling (if that brings back memories, you’re showing your age!).
So a long night was expected, with plenty of waiting around making it difficult to ‘switch on’ when it was time to play. With plastics also added to the mix, some tough games followed and eventually it came down to the last rubber of the night. Thankfully the long night ended on a high, with a 5-4 win – however by that time the clock had run round to 11.30pm before they were able to start the journey home (ditto the memories).
Tuesday night also saw the last match of the season for the Mens 2 – an away trip to TP Riley-Norton 3. Sadly they were only able to field two pairs, swaying the result, but we still managed to win four of the remaining 6 games to record a 7-2 win.
So a good result to finish the season and thank you to all those who have played a part. If we can continue the good work on improving the understandiung between our pairings, hopefully it will set us up for a potential challenge for promotion next year.
When TP Riley-Norton 3 came to play our Mens 2 on 26 March it always looked like it could be a tight game, with some experienced heads on both sides. And so it proved, with some close games leaving the result hanging in the balance with all to play for in the last two games.
These eventually got started, side-by-side, only a little before our normal 9.30 finish time. Fortunately the late hour didn’t affect the concentration of our two pairs and they held their nerve to put a final gloss on the evening for a 6-3 result.
There’s just one fixture left for the Mens 2 this season – TP Riley-Norton 3 away…
Sadly our Mens 2 side were unable to get a full team out for the tricky Saturday evening fixture against Three Spires up in Lichfield, and so only two pairs travelled. Effectively starting three games down isn’t a great start, but they persevered and ended up sharing the other six games – something of a moral victory if not an actual result.
Last night the Mens 2 took on close rivals Cannock 2. At first it didn’t look promising, with some tight games but only one of the first four going our way. However the tide slowly began to turn as they gradually clawed their way back.
In the end their perseverance paid off, winning the last rubber to seal the comeback win with a 5-4 result.
The Mens 2 match against TP Riley-Norton due for 7 February has been re-arranged for Tuesday 10 April.
After the Mens 1 played last week, this week was the chance for two more teams to play their first match of the New Year.
First up at home on Monday night was the Ladies team, who were up against an experienced Three Spires side. Sadly their best efforts went unrewarded as the strength of the opposition proved too much, and so it ended as a 6-0 loss.
The following night saw the Mens 2 travelling to play away at Cannock, but unfortunately for the first time this season we weren’t able to get a full side out. So with three games conceded before we even began, it was always going to be a difficult night. So although our two pairs managed to share the six games played, the end result was 6-3 to Cannock.
That leaves the Mixed team as the only ones yet to play in 2012, but an away trip to TP Riley-Norton beckons this Tuesday (24th).
One slight amendment to the last Mens 2 result – apparently their game against Three Spires was a 6-3 loss, not 7-2. Unfortunately I was given the wrong result by… one of the team…!
Following their two victories against Pinfold last month, our Mens 2 took on Three Spires on Monday night. Unfortunately it turned out to be a long night and saw the winning run come to an end with a 7-2 loss.
With their next match not coming until the middle of January, there’s plenty of opportunity to work on a few things for the rest of the season.
Monday night saw the Mixed team hosting near-neighbours Tiki who are always a strong team. We were going to be up against it and so it proved with an 8-1 loss, although a couple of very tight games might have gone our way on another night to give a better look to the result.
Our Mens 2 team travelled away to Pinfold on Tuesday night which meant a change to plastic shuttles. The game turned out to be a very close affair, going down to the last game of the night. However all the effort paid off and we came away with a 5-4 win!
