Efficient display from Mens 1

The fourth match of the season for the Mens 1 was on a cold, damp Tuesday evening.  Reedswood 2 were also our fourth different opponents so far, having been promoted from Division 3 last year.  These are the sort of games we need to dominate if we want to do well this season, and we duly imposed ourselves to record our second 9-0 sweep of the season.

Second Mens come off second best

Following their two victories against Pinfold last month, our Mens 2 took on Three Spires on Monday night.  Unfortunately it turned out to be a long night and saw the winning run come to an end with a 7-2 loss.

With their next match not coming until the middle of January, there’s plenty of opportunity to work on a few things for the rest of the season.

Ladies finally get their season going

It’s already the second half of November, with the season in full swing, but our Ladies still hadn’t had a match.  This finally changed at half past six on Sunday evening, with them travelling to play Walsall Wood.  Sadly it wasn’t to be a winning start, the score ending up at 5-1.

Good win for Mens 1

The Mens 1 were in action again last night, hosting BJF.  Some good games ensued between the two teams, but ultimately we ran out 8-1 winners.  So another good result, and now we wait until next Tuesday when we travel to Reedswood.  In the meantime, there are also Ladies and Mens 2 matches so it’s a busy time!

First Beasley team lack the necessary ruthlessness

The Beasley tournament comes round each year – a handicapped system aiming to ensure those at the bottom of the League stand a fair chance of success too.

Tonight saw the first of our two teams up against Pinfold, who arrived with essentially non-League players.  The pressure was therefore on us to win the games without conceding enough points so the handicap might come to their aid.

In the end, we won all 12 of the games played giving us a score of 252 points with 134 points conceded – a lead of 118.  When the handicap was revealed, it was 154.5 to Pinfold, giving them a total of 288.5 – and victory by 36.5 points!  Too many easy points given away eventually ended up costing us victory, but that’s the joy of the handicap format.

The second of our teams got a bye in the first round – only to now face Pinfold away!  A chance for revenge, but once again we’ll need to play some tight games as almost inevitably there’ll be another large handicap…

Second victory for Mens 1

The Mens 1 were back in action on Monday, with an 8-1 win over TP Riley Norton 2.  Whilst we always looked likely to win the match, a few close games could, perhaps, have led to a less-flattering scoreline.

Our next match is against BJF 2, who finished on equal points with us last year – just one extra game over the whole season giving us the edge!

The hard games continue for the Mixed team

Starting the season with games against last year’s champions and then the runner’s up was always going to be hard-going.  Our third match on Monday night was the return with Reedswood 1 so there was no let up.  Plenty of effort couldn’t overcome their greater consistency, and despite some close games we went down 8-1.

The Mixed team now has a long break in the fixture list until late January.  At least when we return, we should have a better chance of getting something from the games.

Christmas holiday dates

Advance warning of the dates the hall is closed over Christmas.

The last night will be Monday 19th December, and the hall will re-open in the New Year on Friday 6th January.

Christmas meal – Saturday 26th November

For those members who haven’t yet signed up, please speak to Nerissa – before she tracks you down!

As in previous years, our Christmas meal has been arranged a little earlier so it shouldn’t clash with meals at work, family visits or Christmas shopping (finished already…?!).  This year we’re at Oddfellows Hall in Compton so it’s only two minutes from the club.

Difficult for the Mixed, good away win for Mens 2

Monday night saw the Mixed team hosting near-neighbours Tiki who are always a strong team.  We were going to be up against it and so it proved with an 8-1 loss, although a couple of very tight games might have gone our way on another night to give a better look to the result.

Our Mens 2 team travelled away to Pinfold on Tuesday night which meant a change to plastic shuttles.  The game turned out to be a very close affair, going down to the last game of the night.  However all the effort paid off and we came away with a 5-4 win!
